How does it work?

Jose Antonio Vargas' Read-A-Thon is a two-week event that aims to increase students’ interest in reading through fun literacy-focused events, while raising money for important PTA-sponsored programs. Our goal is to read a total of 275,000 minutes and raise $25,000 to fund 50% of next year's PTA budget, which will be used to fund vital programs for Vargas students and teachers, such as teacher classroom supplies, field trips, school assemblies, community events, after-school enrichment classes and more. We’re challenging all Vargas students to read a certain number of minutes a day and have friends, family and community members sponsor all of our readers.

How to participate in the Read-A-Thon

1. First, activate your student’s fundraising page: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/javargas2022/addme

To customize your student’s page, include your e-mail address for additional access (this is optional). Students will receive a Scrabble tile keychain for activating their pages.

2. Then spread the word! Share your student’s page with your family and friends! Supporters can make a one-time donation, or pledge per minute read.

3. Read, read, read!

4. Track your minutes read at home. Submit how many minutes read each day: https://tinyurl.com/VargasAtHomeMinutes

• Here's the impact of pledges: If one student reads 30 minutes per day with pledges totaling just $0.20/minute, they will raise $84. If every student raises this amount, we can fully fund our PTA student enrichment and community engagement budget! This includes classroom enrichment, student assemblies, after school activities, and community events like ice cream socials and movie nights!

5. Students will have an opportunity to earn prizes individually and for their classroom, based on minutes read and pledges collected. They also have an opportunity to win raffle prizes based on participation. See Minutes Tracking & Rewards page for more info.

What counts as minutes for the Read-a-thon?

Any reading activity will count including:

Reading a book alone

Being read to

Reading together with your adults or siblings

Any reading done in class

Are there prizes for participating in the Read-a-thon?

Yes! There will be prizes for:

• Anybody who participates

• Anybody who meets reading goals per grade

• Top readers in each class and top classes

• Raffle prizes

• if the entire school meets the school goal of 275,000 minutes!
